The Basics of Poker Betting
If you are new to the game, you will hear lots of phrases which are typical of the poker language. However, once you get to know the basics of the game, all these terms will make sense to you and soon you will be speaking the poker language as well.
Before the cards of a game are dealt out, the online poker players put money in the pot to ensure that everyone has a stake in the game. There are two ways in which it is done – Antes is where everyone puts in a small, pre determined amount of money in the pot. The important thing is that, antes are not bets but just a way to get the pot started. The other way to start the ball rolling is by putting in a forced bet which is called a “blind”. Usually, in a Texas Hold’em game, the two players to the left of the dealer puts in the blind bets. The first to the left puts in the small blind while the second to the left of the dealer puts in the big blind. Big blind usually refers to the amount of the bet which is pre determined before the game begins. The bets are called blind because the players place the bets without seeing their cards. The small blind is usually half or one third the amount of the bet.
How a round of betting commences in a game of poker is as follows. If you are playing with antes, you can place a bet or “check” it in which case you do not bet. If you do bet, then the person to your left has to either “call” the bet (that is, has to match it) or raise the bet or fold their hands (that is surrender). The round of betting is considered to be over when each person calls in the bet and everyone has put in the same amount of money in the pot.
When betting, usually some common structures are followed. The spread limit games at PartyPoker which are usually played at homes, involves a minimum and a maximum amount specified for betting. Thus, if the spread limit for a game is $1-$5, then the minimum bet that can be placed is $1 while the maximum amount can be $5. In most casinos, the fixed limit game is played whereby, how much you can bet and raise is determined before each round of betting. In pot limit games, the amount you can raise or bet is the amount of money thrown into the pot. In a no limit game, such as Texas Hold’em as seen on television, there is no limit to how much you can bet and you can literally push in all your chips into the pot at any given time.
Some common phrases used in the pokerstars games are words like “buy in” which means the amount of money required to sit at a table or enter a tournament; “bump” usually means to raise a bet and so forth. The phrases used in poker have become numerous and have also found uses in our daily lives.
